A Brief Overview of Silk Screen Printing

How Silk Screen Printing Is Done

Creating a Stencil: The first step in silk screen printing is creating a stencil, also known as a “screen”. To do this, you will need a piece of mesh material and a frame to stretch it tight. Once the mesh is stretched tight, you will need to block off the areas where you don’t want ink to go through. This can be done with paper or tape.

After the areas are blocked off, you will need to expose the image onto the screen. This can be done with photographic emulsion or light-sensitive chemicals. Once the image is exposed onto the screen, you will need to wash out the parts of the image that were not exposed to light. This will leave you with a reverse image of your design on the screen.

Now it’s time to get printing! First, you will need to place your screen on top of the surface that you want to print on. Then, you will need to apply ink to the top side of your screen using a squeegee. Be sure to use even strokes as you apply ink to avoid any irregularities in your design. Finally, press down on the squeegee to push ink through your stencil and onto the surface below!

Repeat this process as necessary until your design is complete.
